Our history
An island with rural roots
For centuries, Formentera has been an island that has lived off the countryside and the sea. Until the arrival of tourism in the 1950s, agriculture was a fundamental activity for the subsistence of its inhabitants. Marked by a dry, low-intensity agriculture, agricultural production was always destined for self-consumption, conditioned by the small size of the plots, the low rainfall and the lack of infrastructures. This situation was aggravated by insularity, dependence on external inputs and the lack of profitability of the primary sector.
Faced with this reality, in 2008 a group of members, with the support of the Consell Insular de Formentera, the Govern Balear and UCABAL, decided to reactivate the cooperative to reverse the abandonment of the countryside and promote local development.
What is the Cooperativa del Camp
Founded in 1952, the Cooperativa del Camp de Formentera was created to defend the island’s agricultural and livestock production. After a period of inactivity in the 1990s and 2000s, it was reactivated in 2010. Since then, it has become a driving force for the reactivation of the countryside, promoting organic farming, recovering abandoned land and supporting small producers.
In 2015, a new phase began: a new manager was hired, an industrial building was built, agricultural machinery was acquired and the ‘Cens de Terres de Cultiu’ project was promoted, which allows the management of land ceded by landowners to return it to agricultural use.
Today, the cooperative manages some 290 hectares, promotes organic production (registered with the CBPAE) and is committed to local varieties such as Blat Xeixa, a native wheat of great nutritional and cultural value. It has also started up a flour mill, fig and fruit tree plantations and aromatic plant projects.
Our vision
Our goal is to evolve into an agri-food cooperative that promotes local and zero-kilometre products, ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture in Formentera. Without neglecting our essential services, we want to strengthen the connection between producers and consumers, offering quality food with its own identity.
Our values
🌱 Sustainability
We are committed to responsible and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
🤝 Cooperation
We team up with local farmers and producers to create a network of mutual support.
🏝️ Commitment to the island
We believe in the richness of our land and the importance of preserving its agricultural culture.
🔄 Innovation and tradition
We combine inherited knowledge with new techniques that allow us to continue to grow.
Cens de Terres de Cultiu
This project, promoted with the Consell Insular de Formentera, aims to recover abandoned land and return it to agricultural use. The owners voluntarily cede their plots of land to the cooperative, which works them and uses them mainly to grow dry cereals. Today, more than 290 hectares are under management.
The project has contributed to improving the landscape, reducing dependence on external inputs and promoting local produce. In addition, technological tools for agricultural management have been provided and soil studies have been carried out.
Our commitment
Today, the Cooperativa del Camp has more than 430 members and continues to be committed to sustainability, the recovery of the countryside, organic farming and the promotion of the local economy. We work to ensure that Formentera retains its rural identity and that its products reach further and further afield, without losing their essence.
Future projects
The cooperative continues to grow with new initiatives to improve the local agricultural sector:
Installation of its own oil mill to transform olives into local oil.
Creation of a workshop and cheese dairy to promote processed products.
Installation of solar panels in the industrial building for self-consumption.
Development of a phytosanitary and irrigation warning station.
